What skills, knowledge and experience does a designer need?

The designer must have technical knowledge of the construction industry relevant to the project, and health and safety skills, knowledge and experience to carry out the work they have been appointed for. 

The level of health and safety skills, knowledge and experience should be proportionate to the complexity of the project and the range and nature of the risks involved.

How can I demonstrate my health and safety skills, knowledge and experience?

  • Records of continued professional development (CPD)
  • Membership of professional institutions or bodies (e.g. BALI)

What do I need to do as a designer on a project?

  • Before construction begins
    - Take account of pre-construction information provided by the client or the principal designer. 
    - Provide design information to principal designer (if involved), for inclusion in the pre-construction information and the health and safety file
    - identify, eliminate, reduce and control risks in your design and the overall project design. Consider the risks people may be exposed to during construction and use of the building or structure you are designing.
    - communicate, cooperate and coordinate with any other designers (including the principal designer) so that all designs are compatible and ensure health and safety, both during the project and beyond

  • During construction 
    - Liaise with the principal contractor and other designers throughout the construction phase
    - Review design in relation to health and safety of project throughout project

  • Post construction 
    - Contribute to health and safety file
