European Union postpones glyphosate renewal verdict until 2023

08 Jun 2022 | Technical News

The European Food Safety Authority (EFSA) has announced the decision to renew the licence for glyphosate has been postponed until July 2023. Post-Brexit pesticides regulations mean use of glyphosate in UK is therefore likely to be extended until July 2026.

Since the end of the Brexit transition period on 31st December 2020, an independent pesticides regulatory regime is in operation in Great Britain (England, Scotland and Wales). Under this new regime, Active substance approvals due to expire before December 2023 have been extended for 3 years to allow time to plan and implement the GB review programme.

Whilst glyphosate was approved for use in the EU until 15th December 2022, it is likely the European Commission will extent this deadline to account for the period of review.

Note: Under the terms of the Withdrawal Agreement and Northern Ireland protocol, EU plant protection product legislation continues to apply in Northern Ireland.
