Driver and Vehicle Standards Agency launch accredited trailer training

19 May 2022 | Technical News

Following a change in law earlier this year that allows holders of a car licence from 1997 onwards to tow a trailer weighing up to 3,500kg maximum authorised mass, there has been a need to ensure those now entitled to tow with a trailer are competent in doing so.

This competency is particularly important in the landscape industry, where contractors may require employees to drive a vehicle with a trailer as part of their work when they have little or no prior experience of driving with a large trailer.

The Learning to drive a car and trailer syllabus has been developed by the DVSA in conjunction with industry experts, and DVSA is now recognising expert organisations who are approving individual trainers joining the scheme. Newly accredited trainers are now running courses to suit every level of ability, including:

  • Towing for the first time
  • Returning to towing after a break
  • Towing larger trailer
  • Towing specific types of trailers

Training providers or courses can be found by contacting on of the following organisations:
