Inclusive PPE: new British Standard and BALI call for evidence
BALI has reviewed the draft of a new British Standard on the provision of inclusive personal protective equipment (PPE), due to be finalised and published by January 2026.
The standard, titled BS 30417, will provide general guidance on the selection, purchase, and maintenance of inclusive PPE for various sectors, including landscaping.
It defines inclusive PPE as that which delivers equality of access for all wearers, providing the necessary protection without creating an obvious point of difference or secondary risks.
We welcome the development of this standard and encourage all members who deal with PPE to consider how it might apply to their business.
More inclusive PPE could help improve retention, productivity, and compliance as well as the health and safety of employees.
The standard could also support the industry’s equality, diversity, and inclusion charter, which should in turn help meet the growing demand for landscaping services in Britain.
As detailed by The Royal Society for the Prevention of Accidents, there is evidence of uninclusive or ill-fitting PPE in many industries, including construction, engineering, and healthcare.
We are keen to learn more about inclusive PPE in the landscaping sector, including any success stories and areas for improvement, and would welcome any feedback from members at technical@bali.org.uk
