Have your plants been damaged at border checks?

20 Nov 2025 | Technical News

If you import plants and have experienced greater damages in recent years, please contact us at technical@bali.org.uk.

Damages as well as delays and administrative burden have all too often become the costs of bringing plants into the UK since Brexit.

In May, UK and EU leaders agreed to ‘work towards’ a so-called sanitary and phytosanitary (SPS) agreement, which promises to reduce border checks and associated impacts.

However, negotiations on such an agreement are yet to begin and officials are suggesting the benefits may not be felt until 2027 at the earliest.

We believe the government needs to do more in the meantime to make border checks work for importers and will be working with partners to bring about this change.

Meanwhile, BALI continues to work with industry and government through the Environmental Horticulture Group to represent landscaping and horticulture in the SPS negotiations.
