Sones Accountancy Services: Have you verified your identity with Companies House?
Since 8 April 2025, Companies House has allowed company directors, LLP members, and people with significant control (PSCs) to voluntarily verify their identity. This is part of a legal change which helps prevent fraud and ensures the Companies House register is accurate. However, from November 2025, this becomes mandatory. Have you verified your identity?
From 18 November 2025, ID verification (IDV) becomes mandatory for existing and new directors, PSCs, and LLP members. By Spring 2026, anyone filing at Companies House must have verified their identity; otherwise, documents will not be able to be filed, and there is a risk of penalties or disqualification as a director or PSC. It is best to complete the process now rather than waiting until the deadline.
The director of Accredited Supplier, Sones Accountancy Services has been through the process, and it was not as straightforward as expected. It involved switching between the GOV.UK website and an ID Check app multiple times, and the steps were not always clearly explained.
To make it easier for you, Sones have prepared a step-by-step checklist to guide you through every stage.
How to verify
- Online via GOV.UK One Login
- In person at the Post Office
- Through an authorised agent (such as your accountant)
Once verified, Companies House will issue a personal code. Keep this code safe, as it links your identity to every company you are connected with and send it to your accountant, as they will need it for any filings.
What you will need
- Biometric passport or UK photocard driving licence
- Smartphone with camera
- GOV.UK One Login account
- Your home address and the year you moved in
