Hackney Council appoints Blakedown Landscapes to deliver major west reservoir improvements
Accredited Contractors, Blakedown has commenced works on the West Reservoir Improvement Project on behalf of Hackney Council; a major programme to enhance access, biodiversity and visitor infrastructure at one of London’s most significant waterside public spaces.
Located on a 30-acre site with 23 acres of open water, West Reservoir is a valued community asset supporting open water swimming, water sports and nature-led recreation. This complex, multi-disciplinary external works project will deliver wide-ranging improvements to landscape, access and visitor experience.
At the centre of the site, Blakedown is delivering a combination of new build and refurbishment works to create a new boat workshop, upgraded changing facilities, enhancements to the water sports offer and a stand-alone café pavilion with outdoor seating overlooking the reservoir.
Elsewhere, works include the construction of two accessible pedestrian bridges, upgraded entrances, and new footpaths and landscape around the reservoir. Soft landscape and biodiversity enhancements feature new tree planting and wildflower seeding to support habitat creation and ecological value. Ancillary improvements include incidental play features, new bins and seating, directional signage and security fencing. Together, these works form part of a wider programme to deliver a safe, inclusive and well-managed public space.
The scheme is being delivered in collaboration with Hackney Council, with Pick Everard as Project Manager, LUC as Landscape Architect, and Pringle Richards Sharratt as Lead Architect for the build elements.
Mayor of Hackney, Caroline Woodley, visited the site to mark the start of works, alongside members of the client, design and contracting team. Reflecting on the scheme, she said
“These exciting improvements are about so much more than bricks and mortar, they’re about opening up this space to even more people and ensuring it reflects Hackney’s commitment to climate action and inclusive design. “We’re proud to be working with the GLA to secure its future for generations to come.”
Chris Wellbelove, Managing Director of Blakedown Landscapes said
“We’re proud to be working alongside Hackney Council, Pick Everard, LUC and Pringle Richards Sharratt on a project that brings together building, refurbishment, landscaping and infrastructure in a complex public setting. It’s exactly the kind of collaborative, high-quality delivery we specialise in, and we’re pleased to be part of a team creating improved facilities, access and public space for the community.”
