12 Feb 2026 | BALI Member News

Installed in 2025, the new robotic system has been specifically designed to work in harmony with Barcham’s patented Light Pots. By embracing advanced technology, Barcham Trees is preparing for the future of tree production, using innovation to drive efficiency, consistency and long-term business resilience.

As a leading supplier producing British- grown containerised trees, Barcham remains committed to delivering the highest standards of quality. The introduction of robotic technology supports this commitment by enhancing precision and consistency throughout the potting process, helping to ensure every tree meets the exacting standards customers expect at a competitive and sustainable price point.

"For some time now, seasonal labour supply issues and the associated rising costs have been a real threat to our industry and pose a serious challenge to the future of UK tree growers. Implementation of the automated tree potting line not only helps mitigate against these issues, but we have also seen real improvements in efficiency, quality and diversity of our product range, allowing us to deliver better value without compromising on standards."

Jamie Peacock, Operations Director

The state-of-the-art potting line has undergone extensive testing ahead of the 2025 potting season, with a strong focus on maintaining quality at every stage of production. The project has been driven by collaboration across the business, with the Production Team playing a pivotal role in preparing the system for live operation.

“Working on this new project has been a great opportunity to develop new horticultural technology within our ever-competitive industry. I’m proud of the momentum we’ve built and excited for what lies ahead, hopefully changing how we look at tree production. Consistently delivering high-quality trees that offer excellent value to customers.”

William Holmes-Chatfield, Production Supervisor

The robotic potting line is currently operating alongside Barcham’s legacy potting machine as the process continues to be refined and streamlined. Twenty-five years ago, Barcham introduced its first revolutionary potting system — which is still one of a kind today. As technology has evolved, so too has the business, with ongoing investment focused on efficiency, longevity and affordability.

“Barcham have always been innovative. We were the first nursery 25 years ago to introduce a semi-automated potting system. Therefore, the next logical step for us was to introduce Robotics. This further streamlines the production process adding consistency and quality to our trees which in turn benefits our customers.”

Warren Holmes-Chatfield, Managing Director

By investing in cutting-edge technology, Barcham Trees continues to position itself at the forefront of innovation within the arboriculture industry, combining tradition, expertise and forward-thinking solutions to deliver consistent, high-quality British-grown trees.
