BALI welcomes consultation on updated new build guidance

22 Jan 2026 | Technical News

The draft guidance, known as the Design and Placemaking Planning Practice Guidance, gives practical advice on creating high‑quality places and buildings, covering:

  • Seven features of well‑designed places
  • Design quality in the planning process
  • Setting effective design codes

The seven features of well-designed places include public spaces, nature, and climate, all of which we value highly and can be delivered by our members and the wider industry, with the right support in place.

We will be looking more closely at the draft guidance over the next few weeks, identifying welcome changes and suggestions for further improvements, and feeding into the consultation process by 10 March.

If you have any comments on the guidance, please email the Policy Team at technical@bali.gov.uk and we will look to build them into our consultation response.

Announcing the draft guidance and consultation, the government’s Housing and Planning Minister, Matthew Pennycook, said:

“Exemplary development should be the norm not the exception so that more communities feel the benefits of new development and welcome it.

“As we act to boost housing supply, we are also taking steps to improve the design and quality of the homes and neighbourhoods being built.

“These standards will help ensure new homes and neighbourhoods are attractive, well-connected, sustainable, and built to last.”
