BALI to unveil groundbreaking “Lay of the Land” report at FutureScape 2025

The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI) will officially launch its highly-anticipated “Lay of the Land” report at FutureScape on 7 October 2025, offering the most comprehensive insight yet into the current state and future direction of the UK landscaping sector.

The report draws on responses from its member businesses, with it being the largest member survey BALI has ever undertaken. It provides a clear view of the challenges, opportunities, and priorities shaping a sector worth £38 billion to the UK economy, supporting over 763,000 jobs nationwide.

Far from being an aesthetic luxury, landscaping plays a critical role in housing delivery, climate resilience, and community wellbeing. With landscaping services alone contributing £17.9 billion in 2023, industry forecasts that this figure could soar to £51.2 billion by 2030 - but only if government policy fully recognises the sector’s economic and social value.

Industry sentiment: optimism tempered by challenge

The survey reveals that business confidence remains strong, particularly among younger professionals - 77% of members aged 25-34 feel confident or very confident about the future. However, optimism is less pronounced among older members, with just 14% of those aged 65 and over sharing that outlook.

The report will also highlight key areas impacting the industry, such as recruitment and skills shortages; environmental pressures; cash flow resilience; growth through investment, sustainability, and technology; and policy needs.

"We're thrilled to be able to bring this report out to government and industry on the importance of the landscaping sector," said BALI Head of Policy and Public Affairs, Amy Cobbett, continuing; "Landscaping is an exciting industry with plenty of opportunities for growth, as evidenced by the 60% of respondents saying that business expansion is a priority for their business. However, government must work with industry to address some areas of concern including employment and climate change which will impact BALI member businesses in the future. This report is crucial in highlighting concerns and opportunities for the sector, which is a key step in future-proofing the industry and continuing the innovation which can deliver across a range of government priorities, including skills and training, economic resilience, environmental enhancement, and social growth."
