Transforming rotten decking into a modern outdoor living space
A primary access path now extends into the garden, leading to a dining terrace perfect for hosting friends and family. Just below, a circular cobbled retreat—slightly sunken and enclosed by scorched upright sleepers forms a secluded, intimate garden feature. Throughout the space, porcelain paving adds elegance, light, and durability. Gravel rills filled with creeping thyme divide the garden into distinct zones. To support modern outdoor living, discreet electrics were integrated across the garden. Every plant was carefully selected for purpose, the planting scheme inspired by RHS show gardens.
Twelve Levels: Transforming a sloping garden in Falmouth
This unloved garden suffered from awkward levels, poor flow and no sense of destination. Limited access meant materials were moved by hand, no machinery used. A new retaining wall was constructed, ensuring long-term stability. Groundworks were completed through a harsh winter. The design embraces the slope with terraced levels linked by slate paving. Features include stone steps, a eucalyptus tree, raised decking with timber shed, charred sleepers, woven fencing, brickwork, olive trees, BBQ terrace with herringbone clay pavers, bespoke planting, regrading and full replanting, transforming into a welcoming, cohesive space.
Dynamic Levels: A Subtropical Family Garden Transformation
This project was about creating a stunning family garden with useable spaces that embraced the sites level change. The design creates dramatic level changes to flood the bottom patio with light and allow new views from the house up into the garden. We incorporated various retaining devices, including gabions with different arrangements of local natural stones. Integrated Oak sleeper crib-style walls offer vertical-planting opportunities, creating a sense of enclosure and privacy. Using scorched sleepers in the Japanese Shou-Sugi-Ban technique. Black painted boundaries serve as a perfect backdrop to subtropical-inspired planting.
