About First Light Landscaping
First Light Landscaping are award-winning garden designers and landscape contractors based in Horsforth, Leeds. We have been designing and building gardens across Leeds, West Yorkshire and North Yorkshire since 2007. We are a design and build company, which means we take a project from the first consultation call through to the finished garden: the survey, the design, the drawings, the costings, the construction and the planting, all handled by one team. In 2022 our Ridgeway project in Roundhay won the Principal Award at the BALI National Landscape Awards. We have also been awarded two RHS Silver medals for show gardens we have built, including at RHS Hampton Court. Our work covers garden design, hard and soft landscaping, natural stone and porcelain paving, bricklaying and walling, decking, outdoor kitchens, garden rooms and bespoke external joinery, fencing, turfing and driveways. Our workmanship is guaranteed for three years and we carry £2 million of public liability insurance. If you are considering a new garden, get in touch to arrange a complimentary consultation call with one of our design team.

Contemporary garden with bespoke timber car port in Leeds
A compact garden reworked into a space for both relaxing and entertaining, usable from morning through to late evening.
A composite deck forms the central seating area, framed by bespoke raised planters whose layered planting softens the clean architectural lines. The standout feature is a bespoke timber-clad car port, with a hidden door concealed within the vertical cladding so the run of timber stays unbroken. Uplighting picks out the planting and boundaries after dark, with overhead and integrated fixtures for dining outside.
Bali Principle Award-winning garden design in Roundhay
Our clients had an extremely steep garden, most of it unusable, with the sunniest spot lost to two large trees. They wanted usable space for relaxing, cooking and socialising.
Our design cut the slope into three zones: an outdoor kitchen, a decking area, and a sandstone patio opening from the French doors. Corten steel steps filled with resin-bound gravel rise through lush planting to the decking, where a bespoke Corten water feature sits.
This project won the Principal Award at the 2022 BALI National Landscape Awards.
Message in a bottle garden at RHS Hampton Court Palace 2021
In July 2021 we built the Global Impact Garden: Message in a Bottle, designed by Tracy Foster, at the RHS Hampton Court Palace Garden Festival. It was awarded a Silver Medal.
The garden is a discarded iron bottle washing towards the shore, with a bright, vibrant garden growing inside it rather than pollution. A sea of flax surrounds it, chosen for its blue flowers and swaying seed heads, and because flax is one of many plant species used to make natural alternatives to plastic.
