Advanced British Standard - Association update

21 Mar 2024 | BALI News

The Association would like to thank everyone who took the time to give the Association feedback on Government proposals for the new Advanced British Standard.

The consultation closed on 20 March 2024 and your thoughts have helped to inform the Association’s response to the proposals.

In general, we have been supportive of the Government’s plans and have welcomed a system that proposes to simplify the qualifications framework for ages 16-19, whilst broadening the range of subjects that young people will study.  We believe that the proposals will help young people become more adaptable and successful in a changing world of work.

Of course, the Association has reflected some of the concerns that you have with the proposals. These included the emphasis on continued compulsory Maths and English studies, the challenges of engaging employers to deliver meaningful work placements, and ensuring that sufficient funding is available to attract sufficient, high-quality teaching staff to deliver the new qualification.

There is a long transition to the new Advanced British Standard, and this is the first step in gauging employer reaction to the proposals. We will be actively involved in the ongoing consultation process and will welcome your views on future proposals.

The Association will inform our members when our response has been published on the Department for Education’s website.
