Projects

Roof Terrace

Completed: 24/03/2015
Location: Wimpole Street, London

To work alongside main contractor to produce working drawing and implement the scheme onto the fourth floor roof terrace of "Coca-Cola's" London HQ. The space needed to be aesthetically pleasing whilst also practical for meetings, dining, breakout areas and even exercise classes. Following many meetings finalising details such as, irrigation, wildflower/orchard meadow, feature walls, planters, benches, pergolas , zinc tables and decking, Gavin Jones Ltd commenced work on site 12th December 2014 with a completion date of April 2014. Initial challenges centred on the access to the terrace overcome by using a hoist for all materials. The planters, pergolas and boundary panels were constructed off site and then lifted onto the roof via a mobile crane. Also, as the roof was being re-profiled and re-waterproofed at the same time as our construction this meant the area available to us was small; as a knock on effect it was difficult to ensure decking aligned throughout the project. Decking frames were constructed using larch on pedestals and then clad. Planters were fitted with leca and lightweight soil and planted and then final irrigation was installed. The meadow was planted using Lindum wildflower turf onto a growing medium with a drainage layer. Zinc tables and cobbles completed the boundaries. During works we were requested to provide plan and costs for implementing additional screening works to satisfy planning due to an objection by a local resident. This was approved and carried out within the main contract period and included extending the steel posts and wire, install of GRP planters with trachelospermum jasminoides frames and extend irrigation. Gavin Jones Ltd are now maintaining the site.

Chiswick House and Gardens

Completed: 24/03/2015
Location: Chiswick , London

Chiswick Gardens is a restored 18th century garden in West London, open to the public daily. Gavin Jones Ltd won the ten year contract to maintain the gardens from April 2014 and we employ a full time Head Gardener and operative alongside seasonal and part-time employees. The grounds cover 65 acres of sweeping landscapes designed by William Kent and are one of the earliest examples of the English Landscape Garden. The grounds maintenance work consists of the lawn mowing and hedge cutting. The mowing includes the ‘Italian Garden’ which is celebrating 200 years since it’s planting. It has been a prominent lawn outside the Grade I listed conservatory housing an important camellia collection. The hedge cutting focus is on the regeneration scheme in many areas. Litter picking is also a significant feature to the job specification, particularly important as the site is open to the public. We are very aware of the wildlife habitat around the site, in particularly the swans and ducks around the pond area. We work to a schedule of tasks and meet with the Garden Manager weekly. The professional and approachable attitude of our staff is extremely important to the client at this site due its prestigious and public nature. Our staff regularly deal with the public, answering their questions. Their friendly and proficient nature has been noted since the contract commenced. The cricket square has been said to ‘look the best it has in ten years’. Several games are played a week in the cricket season and work surrounding the matches included mowing, rolling and marking it up. After the games we have to level with pitch and re-seed in preparation for the next event. We are delighted that the contract at Chiswick House and Garden Trust is for a ten year term, thus providing us with a project approach where we can make a real improvement to the site over time.
