It’s supposed to be spring! Still, with all this inclement weather making it tricky to get outside in the garden, it’s the perfect excuse to focus on your indoor jungle!

💡 Did you know it's nitrogen in your dog's urine, not acid, that causes the 'burn' patches on your lawn?💡

Dogs have a high level of nitrogen in their urine from the breakdown of the protein in their diet. It's natural and normal, but completely stopping the damage is tricky.

However, there are a few simple steps you can take to help reduce and repair the unsightly yellow and brown patches your beloved companion leaves behind:

🐕 Hydration

Both your grass, and your dog.

Increasing your dog's fresh water intake can help dilute the nitrogen in their urine.

Add a little extra water or low-sodium broth to their dry food, and always make sure they have a bowl of clean water available, especially in warm weather and during high-energy games.

As for your lawn, keeping a watering can or hosepipe on hand to rinse the areas straight after your dog has peed can also help flush away some of that excess.

🐕 Lawn Care

Give your soil some love, too!

Carbon Gold's Lawn Improver contains enriched biochar, which helps absorb the excess nitrogen in the soil.

Biochar also helps with water retention in the soil to aid with that hydration, and is packed with minerals that promote vigorous growth and healthy roots.

Did you know that all of our products are #peatfree?

The government’s directive to ban the sale of peat-based composts this year will contribute to ambitious targets of restoring 35,000 hectares of peatlands by 2025 and broader efforts to achieve net zero. We’re fully supportive of this, and continue to shout about ‘organic’ and share the peat-free message far and wide.

Peatlands are the UK’s largest carbon store; only 13% of our peatlands are in a near-natural state. The degradation has occurred due to drainage for agricultural use, overgrazing and burning, as well as extraction for use in growing media, destroying habitats for wildlife and negatively impacting the peat’s ability to prevent flooding and filter water along the way. When extraction occurs, the carbon stored inside the bog is released as carbon dioxide, contributing to climate change.

Springtime Daffodils are in Bloom! 👏

Here are a few do's and don'ts to help them thrive:

💧Watering: Check the soil regularly - if it's dry to the touch about an inch deep, water moderately to provide about 1 inch of water.
🌼 Feeding your Daffs: Hold off on fertilising until you see flower buds develop. Applying fertiliser too early can promote excessive foliage growth at the expense of blooms. Once buds appear, use a light application of our Biochar Fertiliser specifically formulated for spring-blooming bulbs.
✂️ Deadheading: If some flower buds have already opened and faded, remove them gently to prevent seed formation. Pinch them off with your fingers or use secateurs.
🌼 Preserving for next year: Leave yellowing leaves; they will feed the bulb whilst they die back. Leave them so that you'll get plenty of flowers next year.
🌱 Weed control: Remove any weeds competing with your daffodils for water and nutrients.
🐌 Pest and disease watch: Daffodils are typically resistant but remain vigilant for slugs and snails, especially in damp conditions.

Enjoy these blooms in all their finery. Pop them in a vase for a bright splash of yellow, a lovely reminder that Spring is almost here! 💚
