Research has shown that silica dust is a major killer of UK construction workers. In 1996, some types of crystalline silica were categorised as a group 1 carcinogen – a definite cause of cancer amongst humans. Further research suggests approximately 900 new cases of lung cancer every year can be attributed to past exposure to silica dust in construction or industrial process.
