About Union Terrace Gardens

Opened in 1878, Union Terrace Gardens, nestled near the Aberdeen railway line, initially flourished as a two-and-a-half-acre pleasure ground gifted by the council. However, by the turn of the 21st century, a decline had set in, eroding the charm and beauty of this public park.

Safety concerns after dark compounded the challenges. In 2010, controversial plans to fill in parts of the valley and construct buildings surfaced, triggering a passionate resistance from friends of the gardens. In 2016, LDA Design took on the task of revitalising the gardens for the people of Aberdeen. Recognising the controversy, they launched a campaign featuring thousands of illustrated cards showcasing 'Instagrams of the future.'

The momentum continued with the 'Mosaic Gardens' event in November, where hundreds of flags adorned with garden details were distributed, attracting over 400 participants. This grassroots engagement paved the way for a formal consultation process. A survey on the council's portal garnered over 1400 responses, with LDA Design's proposals ultimately earning a remarkable 91% public approval rating. The detailed planning application was subsequently approved, setting the stage for the rejuvenation of Union Terrace Gardens to commence in 2019.
