What is NHSS18

The British Association of Landscape Industries (BALI)

The National Highways Sector Scheme 18 is the customised management system for landscaping and the environment (including ecology) and will be mandatory for all contractors working for the Highways Agency. From 1st May 2009, new contracts will only be awarded to those who have SSD18 accreditation.

NHSS18 reflects requirements embodied in EN IS09001:2009 Quality Management system with specific relevance to landscape construction and maintenance, arboriculture, environmental management and pesticide application.

The scheme aims to ensure that companies working on roads have a trained and competent workforce. Sector Schemes are designed to provide an industry benchmark, ensuring all processes are planned, and demonstrate continually improving standards, promoting confidence in quality management systems by provision of a robust transparent system.
