Violet's garden is a beautiful outdoor space built in memory of a much loved five-year old girl from Litchfield. The garden offers space and sanctuary where families can remember lost children. Either through quiet contemplation or through play.
When BALI Registered Affiliate Harrowden Turf were approached by Chris Taylor of BALI Regsitered Contractor member, Warwick Taylor Landscapes needing lawn turf and wild flowers at short notice, they were only too happy to help.
Chris was working with a family from Litchfield, West Midlands who had been through some difficult times. Not only had they lost their beautiful daughter Violet, but their journey to build a public garden in her memory had been - to say the least - a tricky one.
To cut a long story short. Violet's parents had been unable to find somewhere that they and her siblings could go together to remember Violet and share memories of her. They decided to build a memorial garden at their local cemetery and worked hard to raise over £80,000 to fund the project.
Work begain in May 2016 but the cemetery's designated contractor (not a BALI member) misinterpreted the brief. Neither the design nor the quality were up to scratch and work was stopped. At this point quite a lot of the money had been spent and legal action was required to recoup the funds so that work could begin again.
In March 2017 Warwick Taylor Landscapes - a customer of Harrowden Turf Ltd - were asked to submit a new design for the garden - which was to be completed in time for an opening party on Violet's 9th birthday - 3rd June.
The new improved design incorporated ideas from Violet's parents and provides lawns for play, wildflower areas for wildlife interest, mature hedges, resin-bound pathways, quiet seating areas, play equipment, violet-coloured planting and some beautiful bespoke artwork.
Work began in mid-may and was completed within 3 weeks. On time and on budget.
Violet's friends and family are delighted with the results. Warwick Taylor are justifyingly pleased with the work and Harrowden are proud to have been a part of the project - albeit a small part.
