    Queen's Park

Grounds Maintenance - Free Public Access
Lying at the heart of Loughborough, Queen's Park is the most extensive, and arguably one of the most important, living elements of the public realm within Loughborough. It has been an important leisure and recreation resource for the town since its inception, and continues to be widely used today.

The park was awarded Green Flag status for the first time in 2008 and has retained it ever since; it's stunning floral displays have also made an important contribution to Loughborough's 'In Bloom' success, with the town having won Gold and best in the Small City Category in 2015's East Midlands in Bloom competition.

Key features of the 4 hectare park include many formal floral beds, a bandstand, bowling green, two ponds and three play areas.

idverde UK, via its subsidiary company, Quadron has maintained Queen's Park since April 2014. The park is maintained on a daily basis by a Head Gardener and a Horticultural Supervisor. There is also a dedicated Rangers presence in the park (also idverde staff) who patrol the park and support with tasks such as litter picking.

The park has an active 'Friends of' group with whom idverde has forged an excellent relationship, with numerous community activities, such as 'Clean for the Queen' events and horticultural activities having been arranged in the park in partnership with the Friends.

Pesticide use is avoided in the park wherever possible and peat is no longer used.

    Southwark Park, London, SE16

Grounds Maintenance - Free Public Access
Opened in 1869, Southwark Park is credited as being the first municipal park in London. The 26ha park boasts a wide range of facilities for visitors including a boating lake, bowling green, tennis courts, children's play area and beautiful gardens.
    Judges comments
"The enthusiastic lady head gardener at this huge 26 hectare Victorian public park in Bermondsey is working with the client officer to drive maintenance standards. The bedding displays are beautiful, the attention to detail on rose beds and shrub areas is excellent and the grass cutting is impressively consistent. The use of herbicides is avoided and hot foam control is currently being trialled in selected areas with other areas being hand weeded or mulched. Bedding plants, when changed, are re-used. Having started with the contractor as a litter picker the head gardener has, over time, developed very good horticultural knowledge and used this to lead her team to deliver the highest standards of maintenance."

The Kyoto & Fukushima Garden, London

Grounds Maintenance - Domestic or Commercial - total contract under £50k

Located within the prestigious Holland Park, the Kyoto Garden opened in 1992 and was a co-operative project between the Royal Borough of Kensington & Chelsea and the Kyoto Chamber of Commerce in Japan.

The new Fukushima Garden extension was created in the summer of 2012 in commemoration of the aid Britain provided to Japan following the Fukushima nuclear disaster.  Quadron has been responsible for the garden’s maintenance since 2003 and employ an extremely high level of attention to detail, adopting traditional Japanese methods wherever possible.

Client: Royal Borough of Kensignton and Chelsea - Barrie Maclaurin

Maintenance Contractor: Quadron Services Ltd - Nicola King

Judges comments: "Until 2012 this element of Holland Park was impeccably maintained by the Japanese using traditional Japanese horticultural techniques. On successfully winning the contract to take over the Garden’s maintenance, the contractor had to work alongside the Japanese team to learn and understand the techniques used and they have just completed their first full year of maintaining it entirely. The enthusiasm of the gardeners is clearly evident in the very high standard achieved. They have worked hard to understand the intricacies of pruning in the manner required by the client and have been presented with Japanese pruning tools in appreciation. The local authority retains Japanese expertise to ensure the contractor is supported in maintaining this outstanding garden to the highest standards. A cracking job."

    Burgess Park, London

Grounds Maintenance - Domestic or Commercial - total contract over £50k

At 56 hectares, Burgess Park is Southwark's largest park, stretching from Camberwell and Walworth in the west to Peckham and the Old Kent Road in the east. The park was built between the 1950s and 1980s and has recently undergone an £8m transformation (regeneration works carried out by LDA Design).

Quadron is responsible for on-going grounds maintenance throughout the park.

Client: London Borough of Southwark - Henry Thompson

    Suppliers: Palmstead Nurseries, Amethyst Horticulture

Judges comments: "The contractor has worked in partnership with the client since the park re-opened following an £8m transformation and now has 11 permanent staff on site. Great effort has been put in to improve the park, which in turn has increased the level and complexity of the grounds maintenance requirement. The contractor’s operatives are very proactive and demonstrate great attention to detail, against a background of constant improvements. Wildflower meadows have been implemented, an underpass softened and transformed, and the Moroccan garden and the area around the alms houses are beautiful. This is highly inspired work resulting in very positive engagement with the public and local volunteers."
