Brett Landscaping Best Practice Awards Success

 Brett Landscaping is celebrating success at the British Precast Best Practice Awards, which took place at Concrete 2010, the British Precast Annual Conference, Exhibition and Best Practice Awards held at the Athena Conference Centre in Leicester on 11th May.

Brett Landscaping was awarded second place in the Health & Safety Award category for the company’s ‘Slips, Trips and Falls’ campaign. The company also received a Gold Award with Red Seal for the British Precast Concrete Federation Hard Targets 2010 scheme. The award was in recognition of Physical Safety, Behavioural Safety, and Occupation Health projects.


Brett Landscaping saw improvement in the company’s SHE (Safety, Health and Environment) performance during 2009 and enjoyed a 31% reduced incident rate. A reduced RIDDOR rate (Reporting of Injuries, Disease, and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations of 78% was achieved, helping the company meet a five year target reduction of over 50%.


One member of Brett Landscaping staff, Jorge Dorrego Ortiz, Factory Manager at the company’s Poole site, was personally honoured with the award for Outstanding Contribution to Health & Safety. Under Mr Ortiz, the site has not had a RIDDOR or lost time incident since November 2007 and the minor accident rate has dropped from 14 in 2007 to just two in 2009. Mr Ortiz has built a culture of good SHE practice at the site has lead by example.


Speaking about the success, Meiron Webber, Safety, Health and Environment Manager at Brett Landscaping said; “Hard landscaping is potentially a dangerous industry. We have quarrying, heavy products and machinery, busy sites and heavy transport, so health, safety and the environment are aspects of our business which are taken very seriously at all levels. We do our upmost to ensure that Brett Landscaping is a pleasant and safe environment for employees, as well as for visitors, customers and our neighbours in the community.’

As well as its success in Health & Safety improvements, Brett Landscaping also achieved ISO9001, ISO14001 and OHSAS18001 certification for its Pocklington and Barrow Upon Soar sites.
