Contracts Seminar 1: Pre-contract procedures.

9.15am – 1pm: Speaker: Colin Moore CMLI

The procurement arrangements for a project are fundamental for the success of the scheme and this is particularly true for soft landscape construction and subsequent establishment maintenance. This seminar covers: the types and Standard Forms of Contract in the construction industry; differences between building work; soft landscape work and maintenance work and the effect on Standard Forms of Contract; the different options for procurement of landscape construction and maintenance works; and contractor selection.

This seminar is relevant CPD for Chartered Landscape Architects, P2C candidates, garden designers and anyone involved with the pre-contract stages of a landscape construction or maintenance project. It covers parts C1 and C2 of the P2C syllabus.

Colin Moore has worked in the landscape industry for 40 years with experience as a contractor, clerk of works, and as a landscape architect in local government and private practice. He established Moore Piet + Brookes (MP+B) and was its senior partner for 20 years. He is now a consultant landscape architect providing advice to other practices, undertaking his own landscape projects and providing landscape training and teaching to the landscape industry.

Colin is a recognised expert in landscape construction and maintenance contracts. He has been doing the revisions to the JCLI Contracts since 1993. Colin is the Chair and the Landscape Institute’s representative on the JCLI Contracts Forum and serves on the LI Advisory Council and Technical Committee. He advises the Landscape Institute on Contracts and CDM related issues and answers Members’ queries through the LI and Talking Landscapes.

Environment Seminar: Environmental Policies and Control.

1.45 – 5pm: Speaker: Ian Phillips MRTPI CMLI

Certain types of development or development in sensitive areas require formal environmental impact assessment, often involving specialist landscape expertise. An overview of the relevant legislation, procedures and techniques is included here. Trees are of particular importance to the landscape architect and this seminar will include information on planning controls, including proposed changes, construction-related issues and the role of the Forestry Commission. Statutory and non-statutory designations relating to countryside, biodiversity and heritage issues, their relevance to landscape practice and the roles of various agencies in these areas are also covered.

The seminar also takes a brief look at opportunities for grants and the procedures that need to be followed. The second part of the seminar covers issues relating to environmental controls – of increasing importance to development professionals. These include mineral and waste plans and associated levies, water and waste management, pollution control, the role of the Environment Agency and information on sustainability standards as in BREEAM and the Code for Sustainable Homes.

This seminar is relevant CPD for Chartered Landscape Architects, P2C candidates and garden designers. It covers parts B3 and B4 of the P2C syllabus.

Ian Phillips is a chartered landscape architect and town planner with over 25 years’ experience in both local government and the private sector. He established an independent consultancy in 2007, specialising in the interfaces between landscape and planning, with particular interests in Green Infrastructure, tree issues and community engagement. He is an Enabler for The Glass-House and Design Council CABE and an accredited facilitator for the Spaceshaper consultation tool.

Ian has long been actively involved with the Landscape Institute. He has made significant contributions to NBS Landscape, the Second Edition of the GLVIA, responses to government consultations and producing publications on Green Infrastructure. He has represented the LI with the British Standards Institute on trees, Natural England on policy initiatives, the TCPA on worksheets for eco-towns and with the Trees and Design Action Group. He serves on LI Council and Policy Committee and is Chair of the Appointments Committee. He is an experienced presenter and facilitator and has recently spoken at Ecobuild and a European Landscape Conference in Strasbourg.
