The property owner’s garden design has been exceptionally well implemented by the Contractor. The attention to detail and the quality of work is superb. Site conditions were difficult and 120 tons of rock/shale had to be removed to create the formation levels and to allow the patio to finish flush with the room extension floor. The overall contemporary finish to this modern semi gives it a real wow factor. The client is delighted with the completed project. Judges' Comments
This superb scheme was difficult to fault, with exceptionally good execution. Faced with a plot with very little topsoil and in close proximity to a major arterial route, the contractor has successfully delivered an excellent concept with great attention to detail. The clever use of both a regulated water feature to mask traffic noise and artificial grass combine with a quality finish to make this small scheme a delight.
A sunny courtyard, previously laid to turf, has been transformed into a low maintenance garden with predominantly hard landscaping to meet the client’s brief for a seating and outside dining area. Clever use of brick with raised planters compliments the sandstone paving. The planting has been thoughtfully carried out using structure plants for all year round effect and herbaceous planting for summer colour. The well constructed pergola adds scale and the choice of plants is beginning to create another layer of interest. Hard landscaping has been carried out to a high quality, all resulting in an extremely happy client.
A private garden on the edge of the peak district with extensive views over the hills and valleys to Manchester. The garden is divided by a single track road leading to the moors that surround the site on two sides. A major feature of the area and the garden itself are boundary dry stone walls. Where necessary, these were rebuilt in a sympathetic way to blend into the existing stonework, giving a timeless feel to the scheme. The workmanship of paved and hard surfaced areas was excellent. Overall a good scheme that took a difficult site and embraced it.
The client`s brief required a functional area for entertaining family and friends in a secluded setting. This garden has been created from a bleak field sloping towards the house, which necessitated the removal of 600 tons of rock to achieve the appropriate levels. The design consists mainly of decking, gabions (using 120 tons of the excavated rock) and dry stone walling. The whole project has been achieved to great effect. The decked area links to the house in a very effective way with the rill adding further interest.
Whilst some garden improvements had already been undertaken the announcement of the owner’s two daughters’ impending weddings accelerated the development of the garden to accommodate the wedding receptions at home. Terracing and the incorporation of pathways and retaining walls, supported by varied planting, have turned a very bland garden into one far more in keeping with the character of the house. The quality of the work is excellent and the completed project creates an interesting and mature garden that has delighted the client.
A simplistic design with great practicality and usability that has been faultlessly installed. The guest room, sited half way down the garden, is an unusual but delightful use of garden space.
Clean, crisp contemporary design and build with joint decisions by both family and contractor have delivered a pleasing result for outdoor living, transporting the client back to her native Brazil. The kitchen leads cleverly into the garden at the same level continuing with the same paving throughout. The hard landscaping is of a very high standard with smooth, crisp rendering to walls and raised beds incorporating a David Harper water feature, outdoor lighting and outdoor fire feature for evening entertaining and chilling out. Planting of pleached Carpinus allows screening whilst added summer herbaceous planting with yew box hedges gives structure.
Judges Comments

Judges Comments
This garden is a stunning modern creation that transforms what was a perfectly ordinary suburban garden into a stylish outdoor room. The skill and care demonstrated by the contractor in implementing the 45o angular design approach brought much praise from the delighted clients. The high quality materials used give it a true show garden appeal.

This private garden surrounds a Huf Haus in an area of outstanding natural beauty and stringent planning restrictions had to be met when implementing the Andy Sturgeon based design. Block planting of yew helps delineate the space and gives structure to the main terraced area at the rear of the house. Planting throughout has established well, particularly the distinctive step planting in the lower courtyard garden to the front. Materials and workmanship were of the highest quality and the contractor’s professionalism was highly praised by the client.

Domestic Garden Scheme (Cost Between £100k & £250k)
A scheme that ticks all the client’s boxes, built by an excellent team demonstrating good quality workmanship on a challenging site. Perfect in its realisation, this was a feat of engineering and endeavour that has achieved a garden with a flat lawn and raised walkway out of a steep chalk bank before another drop to the main road. This well thought through scheme has achieved maximum views over the countryside and a feeling of space whilst also providing a comfortable and contained entertaining area on generous timber decking.
Domestic Garden Scheme (Cost Between £100k & £250k)
This high impact scheme required outstanding skills in both hard and soft landscaping to meet the designer’s and clients’ high expectations. The contained, controlled design has been achieved by meticulous attention to detail with crisp lines and bold topiary planting. The refrained use of plant material, using specimens of the highest quality planted with exacting spacing, gives full effect to a scheme that required the highest quality workmanship to achieve its full potential.
Judges' Comments: A brilliantly executed Anthony Paul design, delivering the incredibly crisp, clean and contemporary lines demanded by the designer. Despite this new build home coming with a newly landscaped garden this was taken out to allow the contractor to deliver landscaping perfection, to the absolute delight of the client.
Domestic Garden Scheme - construction cost over £250K
An outstanding urban garden in central London where the quality of the materials used and the workmanship were of the highest calibre. The brief asked for a low maintenance, high quality garden with ample entertaining space and architectural features to terminate an otherwise bland boundary wall. This design and build scheme fulfils all the clients wishes. Classical columns frame a copper wall cascading water feature. Hard surfaced areas of the drive and front entrance lead to an unusual pedestrian pathway using slabs interspersed with cobbles. Planting was well established and softened the boundaries to the site.
Judges' Comments
Following the demolition of the original house and construction of a new residence, the gardens of this St John’s Wood property have been created to meet the exacting requirements of the client. The columns were brought in and ‘distressed’ on site; an impressive water feature created, and all elements of the design implemented using high quality materials and the contractor’s excellent workmanship.
A high standard of maintenance in a very complex garden with numerous areas each with a different theme. Herbaceous borders contain a wide selection of plants requiring a mixture of cultural care and selective pruning with topiary trimmed to a high standard and country hedges, espalier fruit, roses and structural shrubs all well maintained. All beds have a mixture of mushroom compost applied annually and are meticulously dug over. Trees are fed regularly and pruned to shape. Lawn edges are neat with soil and mulch pulled back from edges.

Overview:
Although of a very high standard, all shortlisted entries in this category were judged to fall short of the exacting benchmark of all round excellence demanded by winners of a BALI award. The judging panel unanimously agreed that, to ensure a BALI Award remains the highest accolade achievable by those working in the landscape industry, this category would stand without any contractor receiving an award in 2011.
Soft Landscaping Construction, Cost between £300,000 - £1.5 million
This former derelict and overgrown Essex farmstead had to be completely cleared and prepared before developing this super walled garden and orchard for the Royal Opera House stage productions complex. High survival rates were essential to prevent loss of very valuable trained specimen pear, apple and cherry trees. Landscape planting around the new Opera House workshops completes this impressive planting scheme.

It is a brave contractor who takes up the challenge of installing a replacement system to Wembley’s existing pitch with its controversial history. This logistically challenging contract was carried out in record time. J Mallinson removed the old system and installed a Desso GrassMaster fibre system and helped restore both the pitch performance and our pride in our national stadium’s playing surface. A ‘premier league’ performance from this BALI contractor.

The playground of this Southwark primary school is virtually the only piece of open space in the borough. The sympathetic renovation of the Coach House along with the adjacent Herschel Park, and the construction of the contemporary kiosk, has totally transformed this run down area back to its former Victorian glory along. In particular the skill and commitment by the Contractor in delivering a robust plan for the Coach House refurbishment was superb, as is the attention to the detail and sourcing of materials for the infrastructure of the Park. The entire project has clearly worked well, due in no small part to the successful Client/Contractor relationship.
Judges' Comments The workmanship on this breathtaking waterfront scheme is simply outstanding. The logistics involved were very complex with the contractor’s 76 employees having to work in cooperation with some 50 other contractors on the site throughout the project. The level of technical excellence achieved on this high profile landmark scheme is clear for all to see and provides a wonderful exemplar of BALI, and British, landscape contracting. It is a most worthy recipient of the BALI Grand Award.

The refurbishment of this Belgravia streetscape has been carried out to a very high standard by the contractor. The finish on such detail as the cuts in the stonework, areas around the drains and the changes in levels have all been executed in exemplary fashion.
Good collaboration with the landscape architects and client was key to the regeneration of this London ‘pocket park’ development. The variety of features within the design demanded a range of soft and hard landscape skills from the contractor including bespoke playground elements and natural stonework.
Comprising two derelict ponds on the edge of a housing area and adjacent to a school, this scheme involved their sensitive restoration providing a small but useful wetland nature area to benefit the school and the local community and prevent its abuse by fly tippers. The ponds were carefully dredged and any amphibians placed in a holding pond whilst the work to remodel the site continued. Impregnated quire rolls formed most of the soft edging with treated timber forming the platform features. Hoggin style paths, hardwood seats and a wooden hide structure completed the scheme, now a much used community resource.

A remarkable project where one third of the landscaped site was decked to cover a railway cutting belonging to Network Rail. Provided by a private developer of the adjacent flats, the area was then leased to Islington Council. The working methods to achieve the levels and planting media over the decking, which was laid in bays and to precise depths, was undertaken with great professional skill. The planting quality is exceptional and the play and kick-about areas have been well executed. The Contractor overcame both difficult site access and subsequent restrictions on the decking area on equipment weight.
Judges' Comments This was a unique scheme to renovate a derelict square in the Islington area of London, which was dissected by an open cutting containing two railway tracks. Network Rail installed an engineered deck to cover the tracks and cutting and the contractor installed the newly landscaped garden on top. The resulting square is a delightful enhancement to the area, installed to an excellent finish and achieved through careful management and execution of a complex and challenging brief.
The West Lake project in the remote Jiang Yangfan valley has been created following the careful clearing of an old sludge reservoir and its lush swampwood vegetation. A range of ecological habitats have been created with a wealth of wildlife settling into the open water wetlands and extensive wildflower meadows. Over 80 high quality interpretation signs in Chinese and English provide and excellent outdoor classroom and base for nature lovers.
This extensive scheme involved the transformation of a 630ha urban and industrial wasteland in Hebei province into one of the largest urban parks in China. Planning commenced in 2008 to develop a world class Eco-City with a green urban public park at its core. The focus was on the ecological restoration of a vast area of land left polluted and derelict from coal mining, industrial and domestic refuse dumping and vast subsidence following a devastating earthquake in 1976. The split between Northern and Southern park areas strongly echois our Olympic Park at Stratford and combines public recreation activities and water sports in the north park with conservation of natural wetland environments in the south park. All completed in one year. A brilliant overseas scheme.
Judges' Comments All completed in one year. A brilliant overseas scheme.
This has to be Shanghai’s equivalent of The Eden Project, involving the ecological restoration of an abandoned stone quarry covering an area of 4¼ hectares. Taking a lead from ancient Chinese landscape paintings and with minimum intervention, the designers have managed to retain many of the original quarry features to help educate visitors, allowing them to experience the culture of the quarrying industry. Good use has been made of the reflective qualities of the quarry floor pools. Warm rusty steel plate walls contrast with the rugged, vertical quarry walls to emphasise the industrial past. All this softened by ecological and botanical plantings to complete the visitor experience.
This impressive scheme in the new University campus of the developing Masdar City in Abu Dhabi features extensive paved areas of bespoke interlocking mosaic pcc pavers plus a range of natural stone features. Complex lighting, light wells and water features have been installed within the paved courtyards throughout the scheme testing the technical ability of this BALI contractor in extreme desert temperatures. This is a good example of British designers, BALI contractors and suppliers applying their skills overseas.
Grangemore have created a very lush and atmospheric landscape in this enclosed courtyard development. Powerful water cascades and fast river torrents add and excitement which compliments the carefully selected trees and shrubs to lend a ‘Film Set’ appearance to a technically complex installation. A vast tonnage of natural stone rocks, boulders and paving have crafted into a very natural looking landscape setting. A talented creation by this experienced Irish BALI member and Landscape Architect.
Design Excellence Award – overall project cost up to £50K
A very good example of a design solution for a challenging exposed site with dramatic views, demonstrating the designer’s clear analysis of site conditions, limitations and client requirements for privacy, additional parking, and making the most of the views. The natural stone walls and paving provided a real challenge to the knowledge and creativity of the designer and skill of the contractor. Level changes have been designed into this scheme to great effect, as has the creative use of lighting to enhance evening views and extend garden use. Interesting and appropriate plant selection help soften the hard but attractive stone features.
Design Excellence Award – overall project cost up to £50K
A very competent design with a traditional approach drawn from in depth discussions with the clients. Good spatial definition and transition between different garden rooms. Space has become confined due mainly to selecting five different compartments (driven form the fact the building has five levels). This will be more of a problem as the plants mature but careful maintenance could mitigate this. Good use of existing York stone flags and the overall result looks interesting and inviting.

A design driven and inspired by the grand architecture of the late 19C properties fronting Hyde Park. Demanding technical challenges presented by this partial podium site have been met with skilful design solutions and an imaginative approach to planting and layout. The developer’s requirement to provide an "exceptional garden layout to attract potential clients" has been realised by creating a modern take on 18C parterre with Tuscan Palms providing a quirky twist on the French Riviera whilst respecting the elegant stucco facade of the building. Structural plants and plant formations help form the backbone of this modern yet ornate design.
Design Excellence Award – overall project cost over £50K
A dramatic sweeping layout with a strong geometric design leading from the house interior layout, which enables the design to gather the landscape round the property with ease and style. High quality landscape materials and plants have been used to great effect and plant selection has been kept clean and simple to match the lines and contemporary style of the property. Excellent specification drawing details for major structures in the garden including the stone porch, front gates and wall and solid wood curved table and benches.
Design Excellence Award – overall project cost over £50K
This is a cutting edge contemporary design featuring 'catwalk' style deck areas that float over planting and shallow pools. Exceptional use of 3D sketch-up and animated walkthrough from this designer. Impressive use of floating hardwood deck cantilevered over sparkling blue granite lined dipping pool. Lush tropical planting with rich tapestry prairie style cover has been selected to suit the mild micro-climate enjoyed by this secluded woodland hillside garden. Boundary fencing requires further planting design attention and remains a visual distraction easily solved by strengthening the periphery planting detail. Creative use of heated cables below steep sloping driveway.
Design Excellence Award – overall project cost over £50K
Hot olive grove planting merge with the rolling Dorset landscaping beyond. An imaginative, cutting edge design approach cleverly captures the "borrowed landscape", which has been tied back to the property using sweeping wild flower meadows to blur the boundaries and anchor the design into its surrounds. Stunning hand-sculpted sandstone cladding is brought to life at night with creative mood lighting.

This maintenance scheme was composed of a series of public to semi private open spaces forming the major part of the open space allocation for a prestigious development of apartments bordering the Thames. The maintenance was of a high standard, successfully undertaken despite some difficulties site conditions. Some of the early phased planting had been successfully cut back and reshaped. Grassed areas were of a high standard and replanting where necessary was of good quality, managing to maintain the integrity of the original planting schemes. The contractor has achieved very high client satisfaction.
This is a wonderful site has been pulled back by the contractor from a terribly overgrown state and is now maintained with great sensitivity to a very high level by a dedicated and passionate team. Each of the many individual memorial gardens is separated from the others by Yew hedging and, in addition to the other aspects of their landscape maintenance work, the contractor’s team trims 4.5km of hedge each year, and they do it beautifully.

Despite its position as the twelfth busiest Crematorium in the UK, the whole site exudes peace and tranquillity and the various ‘glades’ provide a real sense of empathy. The grounds maintenance contract totally enhances this excellent and important public facility. Ongoing improvements to the horticultural features, within a restricted budget, is commendable, particularly the introduction of the wildflower areas. A well balanced mixture of mature trees, shrubs, roses, seasonal bedding and well cared for grassed areas create colour all year round. Both the Client and Contractor are to be congratulated in their effective working partnership.
Stapenhill Gardens is clearly the jewel in the crown for Burton on Trent, and it shows! The whole park was a riot of colour with numerous bedding and carpet displays throughout. It is to everyone`s credit that the floral features looked so colourful during this dry period. The two dedicated staff undertake their duties to a high standard. The gardens are further enhanced by the backdrop of mature trees and the river setting. The working relationship between the client and contractor is most effective.
Grounds Maintenance of Business and Private Grounds (Limited Public Access)
A very successful maintenance scheme managed within tight budget constraints. A large, mature private and enclosed soft landscaped site consisting of mature trees, some of historical interest, and large grassed lawn areas surrounding extensive island shrub beds. The site is used by a range of client groups, from children to sun bathers, picnic users and people generally using the site for outdoor leisure pursuits. Part of the day to day working of the site for the company is dealing with the residents’ committee in a professional and interactive way, which was achieved successfully. A considerable logistical challenge with 80 staff covering five major Aspire Defence sites. The contract comprises general camp areas, residential and officers’ mess areas, soldiers’ living accommodation, sports grounds, astro turf sports areas, cricket pitches and cemeteries. Whilst difficult to comprehend the scale of the operation, it has resulted in sites being maintained to the highest maintenance standard, perfectly matching the specification set at each camp. There is an excellent recycling culture with all prunings and green waste used as a top up mulch to shrub beds. The passion of both staff and management is clearly evident throughout.

The contractor has held this contractor for over fifteen years. The site features a range of SSSI areas, which require very specific maintenance in collaboration with Natural England. Maintenance of airside grass areas presents some technical challenges and requires specialist trained staff. Despite the vastness of this site it was immaculate and, even to a BALI judge, that’s impressive.
Grounds Maintenance of Business and Private Grounds (Limited Public Access)
The essence of this scheme and its success revolves around very enthusiastic staff taking pride in what they do and how they achieve it. Difficult physical site conditions and involvement from various client groups are dealt with in a professional and positive way resulting in a high degree of client satisfaction. This has improved the overall look of the site and is an ongoing policy.

Highly creative and unique lighting used within this imaginative scheme presented new technical challenges for this contractor. Ambitious use of steel plate, porphyry gabions and bright red rubber crumb path surface demanded a varied and high skill level and technical knowledge were essential to ensure success. The aim of the design was to regenerate a subway and in doing so reconnect a community split by Glasgow’s M8 motorway. It is non-standard and has been effectively and innovatively used to ensure safe passage for pedestrians, cyclists and street entertainers alike!

A crystal clear natural swimming pond, blending in to the surrounding rolling Gloucester countryside and finished to an extremely high standard. All pumps, lighting and services have been carefully concealed beneath a diving deck. This was fairly complex scheme on a sloping, exposed but beautiful site.
A quality project of real endeavour, challenging and yet sustainable, with positive environmental and biodiversity benefits for London. 1025m of green vertical walls over 11 floors of the hotel viewed by guests staying on floors facing inwards to the central atrium. Further living wall wraps around the building on all four elevations between floors 9-11. The rooftop terrace restaurant has green roofs of Sedum matting mixed with wild flower seed. Containers of herbs cut fresh by the chefs for use in the restaurant. Bee activity was very noticeable on plants. An outstanding achievement by the contractor.
Judges' Comments This is an absolutely brilliant scheme. The 12th floor boasts a sedum roof with wildflowers, beehives, and planters with fresh herbs used regularly by the hotel’s restaurant chefs. The north and south walls have been covered with plants selected specifically for the living wall environment and kept alive successfully using a triple feed irrigation system. This is a quite unbelievable scheme and an amazing feat by the contractor. Vast and brilliant.

A truly impressive extensive hard landscaping scheme which has been undertaken to the highest possible standards at Salford Quays. The logistics in handling and laying the 40 barges of Chinese stone delivered via Manchester Canal from Liverpool to Salford was highly organised. The Contractor had to liaise with many other contractors working on site along with clients moving into the new office accommodation. At the peak over 50 contractors and 2000 staff was working on site.
The soft landscaping element of the work was also undertaken to a very high standard. Both the Client and Contractor are to be congratulated on achieving the work to tight deadlines and within budget.
